Things To Do — White Lake / Montague Family Camping Trip
The trip: Shawn is camping at White River RV Park & Campground in Montague, Michigan (945 W Fruitvale Rd, Montague, MI 49437) for roughly June 22–28, 2026, with his parents (both 60s) and his three nieces/nephew (ages 10, 12, and 15). It's a multigenerational summer trip in west Michigan, on the White Lake / White River system, minutes from Lake Michigan beaches and a short drive from Muskegon and the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The goal of this doc is a menu of real, currently-operating options that spans grandparents, kids, and a teen — from high-energy adventure days to mellow scenic ones.
A few orienting facts: Montague and Whitehall are twin towns straddling the channel where White Lake meets Lake Michigan. Muskegon is ~25–30 min south; Silver Lake Sand Dunes / Mears / Pentwater are ~25–40 min north. The campground itself is the easy "do nothing" basecamp.
Book-ahead flags (read first):
- Kayak/canoe/tube rentals (Happy Mohawk): weekends fill in summer — call ahead, (231) 894-4209.
- Mac Wood's Dune Rides: walk-in / first-come (no individual reservations) but go early on warm days; lines build.
- Michigan's Adventure: buy tickets online in advance for the discount; water park needs 65°F+ to open.
- White River Light Station: small museum, check current-day hours before driving over.
1. On-Site & White Lake / White River
White River RV Park & Campground (basecamp)
- What: ~275-site park with full hookups plus cabins. On-site: heated swimming pool, arcade, playground, basketball court, gaga ball, sports courts, fishing pond / riverbank fishing, and on-site rentals of canoes, kayaks, tubes, and rafts. There's a creek/river running through.
- Who it suits: Everyone. The pool + arcade + gaga ball cover low-effort kid/teen fun without leaving camp; grandparents get easy riverbank fishing and campfire/picnic areas. Good "rest day" anchor between bigger outings.
- Notes: Confirm rental hours and whether tubes/kayaks need same-day sign-up at the office. https://whiterivercampground.com/
Happy Mohawk Canoe Livery (White River paddle)
- What: Family canoe/kayak/tube/raft livery on the White River (a state-designated Natural & Scenic River through the Manistee National Forest), operating since 1963. They're the only rental outfit on the White River. Price includes transportation, paddles, and life jackets. 17' canoes (room for gear), kid-friendly stable rafts, and lazy tubes.
- Distance: A few minutes / "a few miles" from the campground.
- Who it suits: Great multigenerational pick — pick a short, calm float for grandparents and the 10-year-old; the 15-year-old can take a kayak. Rafts "won't tip over," good for nervous paddlers.
- Notes: Open weekends May–Labor Day (plus September weekends) — late June weekdays may be limited, so call ahead: (231) 894-4209, happymohawk63@gmail.com. https://happymohawk.com/trips-and-prices/
White Lake swimming, fishing & launches
- What: White Lake has a public boat launch and fish-cleaning station (~15 min from camp); calm inland-lake water is warmer and gentler than Lake Michigan for the younger kids.
- Who it suits: Grandparents/young kids who want flat, warm water and easy fishing.
2. Lake Michigan Beaches, Dunes & Lighthouses
White River Light Station & Museum (Whitehall)
- What: Historic 1875 lighthouse turned small maritime museum at the White Lake channel. Climb the spiral staircase to the top of the 38-ft tower for channel/Lake Michigan views; see the original Fourth Order Fresnel lens and nautical exhibits.
- Distance: ~10 min from camp.
- Who it suits: Sweet spot for the whole group — short, interesting, photogenic. Kids must be 40" tall to climb the tower (all three are fine).
- Notes: Open ~7 days/week late May–early Sept (Mon 11–4, Tue–Sun 10–5 in the 2025 pattern; confirm 2026). Small admission. Aug 6–8 = White Lake Maritime Days = free climbs (likely after this trip). https://www.michigan.org/property/white-river-light-station-and-museum
- Sunset tip: The light station and the channel are a noted sunset-viewing spot.
Medbery Park Beach (closest public Lake Michigan beach)
- What: The nearest public Lake Michigan beach to White Lake, on the channel side opposite the light station. Easy sand, good for an evening swim/sunset.
- Who it suits: Low-effort beach day for grandparents; close enough to pop over after dinner.
Duck Lake State Park
- What: 728-acre park with a towering sand dune and a mile+ of Lake Michigan shoreline, plus a separate calm inland lake. Hiking, picnicking, swimming.
- Distance: ~15–20 min south (between Whitehall and Muskegon).
- Who it suits: Nice "both worlds" beach day — calm Duck Lake side for the younger kids/grandparents, big-lake side for the teen. Quieter than Muskegon State Park.
- Notes: Requires a Michigan Recreation Passport (~$11 day pass for out-of-state plates; cheap annual sticker for MI residents). https://www.visitmuskegon.org/things-to-do/outdoors/parks-gardens/muskegon-countys-3-state-parks/
Muskegon State Park
- What: 3 miles of shoreline (2 mi Lake Michigan + 1 mi Muskegon Lake), dunes, hiking, swimming. Recognized by National Geographic (2019) as one of the most wheelchair-friendly beaches in the U.S. — relevant if mobility is a factor for grandparents.
- Distance: ~25 min south.
- Who it suits: Accessible beach with amenities; big enough to spread out.
P.J. Hoffmaster State Park (the dune-climb park)
- What: Towering dunes and 3+ miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Signature Dune Climb Stairway up the Dune Overlook Trail — ~½-mile round trip, ~220 steps with benches, to an observation deck with panoramic dune/lake views. Also home to the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center (good indoor/educational stop, dune ecology exhibits — useful on a hot or drizzly afternoon).
- Distance: ~30–35 min south (Norton Shores).
- Who it suits: The teen and middle kid will love the climb and the big beach; the grandparents can skip the stairs and enjoy the visitor center, picnic area, and lower beach access. Benches make the climb optional/paced.
- Notes: Recreation Passport required. https://www.michigan.org/property/pj-hoffmaster-state-park
Pere Marquette Park (Muskegon)
- What: Muskegon's main Lake Michigan city beach with a long breakwater/pier walk to the Muskegon South Pierhead Light, concessions nearby, and easy parking.
- Who it suits: Easy, amenity-rich beach + a flat pier stroll grandparents can enjoy.
3. Kid & Teen Favorites (high-energy)
Michigan's Adventure + WildWater Adventure (Muskegon)
- What: Michigan's largest amusement park — 250 acres, 60+ rides incl. 7 roller coasters, plus the included WildWater Adventure water park (three wave pools, body slides, Funnel of Fear, lazy river; Half Pint Paradise for little ones; Camp Snoopy for the 10-year-old).
- Distance: ~25–30 min south (4750 Whitehall Rd — basically on the way from camp).
- Who it suits: The headline kid/teen day. The 15-year-old gets serious coasters (Shivering Timbers, Thunderhawk); the 10/12-year-olds get Camp Snoopy + water park. Grandparents can ride the mellow stuff, people-watch, or do a half-day.
- Notes: One ticket covers both parks. Buy online in advance (cheaper than gate). Cashless only (card / Apple/Google Pay; cash-to-card kiosks on site). Water park opens daily ~noon–6 PM from June 13; won't open if it's below 65°F two hours after park open. Plan a full day; consider a 2-day pass if they love it. https://www.sixflags.com/miadventure
- Heads-up: A multigenerational day here is long and hot — bring the grandparents only if they want the full day, otherwise it's a "drop the kids, parents stay" candidate.
Mac Wood's Dune Rides (Silver Lake / Mears)
- What: Iconic 40-minute guided dune-buggy ride over the Silver Lake sand mountains, with a driver narrating the history/ecology. Running since 1930.
- Distance: ~35–40 min north.
- Who it suits: Universal crowd-pleaser — thrilling enough for the teen, gentle/seated enough for grandparents, and a "wow" for the 10-year-old. One of the few high-adventure things the whole group can do together.
- Pricing (recent): ~$25 adults (12+), ~$15 kids 3–11.
- Notes: Walk-in, first-come, first-served — no individual reservations. Go in the morning on hot days; lines build. Cash + card. https://macwoodsdunerides.com/
Mini golf, go-karts & ice cream
- C's (downtown Montague): 18-hole mini golf + Hudsonville ice cream + hot dogs/nachos. Very cheap (~$5 adult / $3 kid). Walkable from downtown — perfect low-key evening with grandparents.
- Craig's Cruisers – Silver Lake: West Michigan's largest family fun center near Silver Lake — go-karts, mini golf, arcade, bumper boats, zipline, roller coaster, pizza. ~35–40 min north (pairs naturally with a Mac Wood's / Silver Lake day). Best for the kid/teen energy.
- Key North Adventure Golf & Family Fun Center: Mini golf, go-karts, bumper boats, batting cages, arcade, snack bar.
- Hidden Pointe Fun Park: 18-hole landscaped mini golf (kids under 3 free).
- Dairy Treat (Whitehall): Classic walk-up ice cream window with a rooftop patio — local favorite for an after-dinner treat.
Caboose Museum (Montague)
- What: Tiny free railroad-history caboose behind the White Lake Chamber. A 15-minute curiosity stop, not a destination.
4. Family-Friendly & Easy for Grandparents (scenic / low-exertion)
Hart–Montague Trail State Park (paved rail-trail)
- What: Michigan's first linear state park — a 22-mile paved, mostly flat rail-trail from Montague north to Hart, through farms, orchards, forests, and small towns (passes the World's Largest Weathervane and Christmas-tree farms). Connects southward to additional trails (45 mi total to Muskegon).
- Distance: Trailhead is in Montague, minutes from camp.
- Who it suits: Ideal grandparent + kid activity — flat and paved, ride as little or as much as you like, turn around whenever. Stop in New Era for a snack. Teen can push farther.
- Notes: Bring or rent bikes (rental shops in Montague/Muskegon). Trail passport may apply. https://www.traillink.com/trail/william-field-memorial-hart-montague-trail-state-park/
World's Largest Weathervane + Ellenwood Park (downtown Montague)
- What: A 48-ft, 4,300-lb working weathervane topped with a model of the schooner Ella Ellenwood, in a small downtown park on White Lake.
- Distance: In downtown Montague (~5 min).
- Who it suits: Quick photo-op for everyone; combine with downtown ice cream/mini golf. Low effort, high "we saw the world's largest ___" value for the kids.
Montague Farmers Market
- What: Saturday market, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. (mid-May–late Oct) — local produce, baked goods, plants. June 27 (Sat) falls in the trip window.
- Who it suits: Easy morning stroll for grandparents; snacks for the kids.
Wineries, cideries & breweries (downtown Montague "Social District")
- Stoney Ridge Winery (8725 Water St): award-winning wines and ciders, flights/tastings, plus pizza/sandwiches/appetizers. In the walkable Social District.
- North Grove Brewers (8735 Water St): hand-crafted ales/lagers/spirits + tacos & sandwiches.
- Sawyer's Brewing Co. (Montague) and, in Muskegon, Pigeon Hill and Unruly Brewing.
- Who it suits: An evening for the grandparents/adults; the cider/food angle makes it kid-tolerable.
Sunset spots
- White River Light Station channel and Medbery Park are the local go-to sunset views over Lake Michigan.
5. Nature & Adventure
- White River paddle — see Happy Mohawk above; the scenic-river float is the signature nature outing.
- P.J. Hoffmaster dune climb & Gillette Visitor Center — see §2; best hiking + dune ecology.
- Silver Lake Sand Dunes (Mears) — beyond Mac Wood's, you can do a self-guided dune climb / Lake Michigan hike; the Silver Lake side is calm/warm for swimming. ~35–40 min north.
- Pentwater (day trip, ~40 min north): Charming coastal village — great public beach (warm Pentwater Lake + big-lake side), walkable downtown shops/restaurants, channel walk to the Pentwater Pierhead Light, Pentwater Pathways (4 trail systems, ~15 mi of hiking/biking), and Storybrook Village (nationally ranked kids' bookstore — good for the 10/12-year-olds). A relaxed contrast to the Mac Wood's adrenaline.
- Wildlife/quiet: Duck Lake's inland side and the Hart–Montague Trail's wooded stretches are good for low-key birdwatching/wildlife with grandparents.
6. Rainy-Day / Indoor Backups
USS Silversides Submarine Museum (Muskegon)
- What: Tour a real WWII submarine (USS Silversides) plus a two-story indoor museum on submarines, WWII, and Great Lakes maritime history.
- Distance: ~25 min south (1346 Bluff St).
- Who it suits: Big hit for the teen and the 12-year-old (and grandparents who like history); climbing through the sub is memorable. Allow 2–3 hours.
- Notes: Summer hours: 7 days/week, 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Ticket sales end 30 min before close. Mostly weatherproof (sub deck exposed). https://www.michigan.org/property/uss-silversides-submarine-museum
Lakeshore Museum Center / Hackley & Hume Historic Site (Muskegon)
- What: Cluster of indoor sites in downtown Muskegon — Muskegon Museum of History & Science, Hackley & Hume restored Victorian lumber-baron mansions (stained glass, wood carving, guided tours ~1h15m, departures every 20 min, May–Oct), Fire Barn Museum, and Scolnik House.
- Who it suits: Good rainy-afternoon mix — the museum of history & science engages the kids; grandparents enjoy the mansion tours. Weather permitting, lawn historic games for kids.
- Pricing (Hackley & Hume): ~$15 adult, $12 senior 65+, $5 youth 3–12, under 3 free. https://lakeshoremuseum.org/hackley-hume-historic-site/
Indoor family-fun fallback
- Craig's Cruisers (Silver Lake) and Key North have indoor arcades — solid plan-B if a beach day gets rained out.
- On-site arcade at the campground for short showers.
Suggested Day-by-Day Sampler (loose, ~Mon Jun 22 – Sun Jun 28)
A rhythm that alternates a big-energy kid/teen day with a mellow grandparent-friendly day, and keeps a flex slot for weather. Adjust freely.
- Day 1 — Settle in / camp day (mellow). Arrive, set up, swim in the campground pool, riverbank fishing, gaga ball, s'mores. Easy on everyone after travel.
- Day 2 — Big adventure: Michigan's Adventure + WildWater (kid/teen). Full day; buy tickets online ahead. Grandparents do a half-day or rest at camp. (Needs 65°F+ for the water park — swap with a beach day if it's cool.)
- Day 3 — Mellow scenic day. Morning Hart–Montague Trail bike ride (rent bikes), photo stop at the World's Largest Weathervane, lunch + ice cream downtown Montague (C's mini golf), evening wine/cider at Stoney Ridge. Grandparent-paced.
- Day 4 — Beach + dunes (mixed energy). P.J. Hoffmaster dune climb for the teen/kids, Gillette Visitor Center + lower beach for grandparents. Or Duck Lake for a calmer two-sided beach. Sunset at White River Light Station / Medbery Park.
- Day 5 — White River paddle (whole group). Happy Mohawk float — short calm trip for grandparents/young kids, kayak for the teen. Call ahead to confirm a weekday trip. Afternoon rest or campground arcade.
- Day 6 — North day trip (kid/teen high-energy). Drive to Silver Lake: Mac Wood's Dune Rides (go early), then Craig's Cruisers go-karts/arcade, or continue to Pentwater for beach + downtown + the pierhead light. Long but exciting.
- Day 7 — Wrap / flex / rainy-day buffer. Saturday Montague Farmers Market (June 27), then either USS Silversides (history-loving teen) or Lakeshore Museum Center if weather's poor; otherwise a final easy beach + ice cream and pack up.
